Synoptic meteorological conditions of gamma-ray glows in winter thunderstorms

چکیده

Abstract The Gamma-ray Observation of Winter Thunderclouds collaboration has detected 70 gamma-ray glows, a high-energy phenomenon associated with thunderstorms, from October 2016 to March 2020 in Kanazawa and Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture, central part Japan facing the Sea Japan. Based on surface 500 hPa analyses, numerical prediction models, satellite observations, we classify their synoptic meteorological conditions into mainly three types. Most glow-detection cases were west or west-southwest winds around detection sites. Over half took place when convex structure pressure, often trough at hPa, was formed along coast Besides, extract non-detection during winter thunderstorms compare cases. While some have similar as cases, most exhibited higher temperatures 850 − 10 $$^{\circ }$$ ∘ C altitudes, which indicates that electrification occurs altitudes than Therefore, gamma rays might been produced but attenuated before reaching ground undetectable sea level.

In‐Flight Observation of Gamma Ray Glows by ILDAS

An Airbus A340 aircraft flew over Northern Australia with the In-Flight Lightning Damage Assessment System (ILDAS) installed onboard. A long-duration gamma ray emission was detected. The most intense emission was observed at 12 km altitude and lasted for 20 s. Its intensity was 20 times the background counts, and it was abruptly terminated by a distant lightning flash. In this work we reconstru...

A Study of Winter Thunderstorms in the Hokuriku

For about a century, studies concerning summer thunderstorms in the middle latitude zone have elucidated data on both their meteorological and electrical features. By contrast, winter thunderstorms have been studied only for the last few decades. For both reasons of scientific interest and the practical purpose of preventing serious damage by winter thunderbolts to aircrafts and electric power ...

Long‐duration g ray emissions from 2007 and 2008 winter thunderstorms

[1] The Gamma‐Ray Observation of Winter Thunderclouds (GROWTH) experiment, consisting of two radiation detection subsystems, has been operating since 2006 on the premises of Kashiwazaki‐Kariwa nuclear power plant located at the coastal area of Japan Sea. By February 2010, GROWTH detected seven long‐duration g ray emissions associated with winter thunderstorms. Of them, two events, obtained on 1...

High-mortality days during the winter season: comparing meteorological conditions across 5 US cities.

While the relationship between weather and human health has been studied from various perspectives, this study examines an alternative method of analysis by examining weather conditions on specific high-mortality days during the winter season. These high-mortality days, by definition, represent days with dramatic increases in mortality and the days with the highest mortality. By focusing solely...
